Brad Russell, Designer
Creativity gets me out of bed in the morning–and keeps me up at night.
There are not enough hours in the day, to explore the mediums, techniques and concepts that race through my mind. When I arrive at the studio each day, I don’t see a job or even a business– I see an excuse to do what I love.
The interaction between maker and material, is like a conversation. Sometimes the materials say what the form will be and sometimes the form asks for specific materials. The more I learn from this dialogue, the more I push the boundaries. I am fascinated with the history of design and the industrial arts, my aim is to contribute new ideas to the ever-changing landscape of both. Hand One's original pieces are the result of this pursuit, not about simply producing furniture, but creating art– that makes you feel, think, and see things in a new way.
Nature informs and inspires my designs, I am always searching for new ways to tie the beauty of the west-coast into each piece. Many of the unique materials I use are gathered while I am out exploring nature.
I am a Canadian Red Seal Certified Journeyman Joiner with over 10 years of woodworking experience. I have studied Wood-Products Manufacturing at BCIT. My studies of design, materials, and process are ongoing as I explore the history and evolution of modern design.
